The Freedom Walk Parade is symbolic of the emancipated ex-slaves' journey from slavery to freedom. Life was harsh for the newly emancipated. The end of slavery led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands from disease, hunger, and terrorism. According to historian Jim Downs of Connecticut College, the reality of emancipation during the chaos of war and its bloody aftermath often fell brutally short of freedom and the terrible social cost born by the emancipated only accentuates their heroism. Freedom comes at a cost.

We encourage all participants to register for the Juneteenth Freedom Walk Parade, www.mlkfdnorg.com/registration.  However, if you plan to ride in a vehicle the registration donation is $25.00, made payable as a Donation to the MLK Memorial Foundation.  The vehicle charge is waived for groups of seniors who cannot walk the parade route.
